Lost Time (Between Two Evils)- D.L. Orton
Audiobook Edition
After finishing Crossing in Time, I didn’t even hesitate to jump into book two. I absolutely love when sci-fi and romance collide in a story that’s both brainy and emotional, so I was more than ready for the next chapter in Diego and Isabel’s wild, time-twisting saga.
Right off the bat, this one throws you into a pretty grim alternate futur, and it really works. Diego waking up in a forest, totally disoriented (and naked!), only to end up injured and trapped in a strange biodome world... yeah, not your average sequel opening. The setting this time around is darker, bleaker, and more dystopian, which adds a new layer to the story. I really liked that shift in tone. It made the stakes feel higher, the urgency more intense.
The audiobook narration is strong again, and I appreciate how much emotion the voice actors bring to the characters. You really feel Diego’s frustration, grief, and confusion as he tries to make sense of what went wron and what the hell he's supposed to do next. His relationship with Lani (the doctor who saves his life and kind of hijacks his heart) adds a whole new dynamic. It’s messy and complicated, but also believable given everything they’ve both been through.
That said, I still found myself thinking about Isabel the whole time just like Diego. And when that message arrives and turns everything upside down again? I was all in. The emotional pull between past and present, between hope and regret, really hits hard in this one.
A few small things tripped me up, though. Like with the first book, I occasionally found myself a little lost in the timeline shifts and alternate universe logic. It’s fascinating but also a bit dense at times, and I had to rewind certain parts to really get what was going on. The pacing also slowed down a bit in the middle, especially when the focus shifted more to recovery and internal struggles. Important for the character arc? Yes. But it dragged a little compared to the action-packed start and end.
Still, those are minor things compared to how much I enjoyed the ride. This book digs deeper emotionally and builds out the world in a way that feels satisfying and real. I love how it refuses to be just one thing, it’s part love story, part sci-fi thriller, part survival drama, and all heart.
If you’re into emotional time travel, complex relationships, and morally gray decisions set against an end-of-the-world backdrop, Lost Time is absolutely worth your time. Can’t wait to see where the next one takes us.
